GAELIC PROVERBS AND FAMILIAR PHRASES
All the ‘proverbs and familiar phrases’ included on our greeting cards come from a book entitled, “A Collection of Gaelic Proverbs and Familiar Phrases”, published in 1882, (second edition, revised). Well over a hundred years has passed since then. If you are interested and while being sold on Amazon, it is available free, online. No need to contribute to Amazon’s coffers.
Over time, and just like any moon anywhere, language and culture wanes and waxes and sometimes dies. However, despite all efforts from outside forces our language and culture has not died. Just like our very own earth moon, it has survived and today is experiencing a reawakening, a waxing. Certainly, it has also evolved.
Today, we don’t assume masculine pronouns represent everyone (as if they ever did) and we tend to refer to ourselves as Gaels rather than Celts. That is not to say there is no Celtic in us for there is for sure. We are a diverse people.
However, to maintain the integrity of the publication nothing has been changed in any ‘proverb or familiar phrase’ cited on our cards. With that said, please feel at liberty to replace every he and him with she and her or us and them as is fitting for your own particular use. Do also feel at liberty to replace Celtic with Gael as you see fit.
